From the Bar
I stopped into Quaint — after ice cream at Sylas and Maddys (Cappucino Chip FTW!) Quaint felt like the perfect stop between a show and a late walk home — small room, dynamic energy. I had the Daddy Issues cocktail: a Boozy Manhattan w/baggage, and the Smoked Martini. Would drink again.
If you haven't yet, catch Whiskey Dynamite — the raucous, neowestern cabaret residency that’s wrapping up this weekend — is exactly the kind of loud, weird, beautifully staged thing I'm here for. This run finishes Apr 17–18.
KC just announced the FIFA Fan Festival lineup with Tech N9ne on the bill — he opens the series on June 12 — with Flo Rida, The Chainsmokers, Cimafunk, Gabby Barrett and a stack of local names filling the run through July. It’s a weird, big, unapologetic mix — mainstream headliners rubbing shoulders with KC local soul..I'm here for this too!
I’ll see you at the bar ☾

The Smoked Martini @Quaint
I went to Quaint and had the Smoked Martini, and a cocktail called Daddy Issues...but I want to talk martinis today.
Martinis don’t usually work for me. I had one great one years ago, and failed to ask how it was made. I just assumed Gin, vermouth, and an olive...or maybe it was vodka?! I've been chasing that glass ever since; all the rest have been a rough road for me. This Smoked Martini was delicious as it was vivid.
From Wikipedia:
The exact origin of the martini is unclear. The name may derive from the Italian Martini brand of vermouth. Another popular theory suggests it evolved from a cocktail called the Martinez served sometime in the early 1860s at the Occidental Hotel in San Francisco, which people frequented before taking an evening ferry to the nearby town of Martinez, California. Alternatively, residents of Martinez say a bartender in their town created the drink, while another source indicates that the drink was named after the town. Indeed, a "Martinez Cocktail" was first described in Jerry Thomas's 1887 edition of his Bartender's Guide, How to Mix All Kinds of Plain and Fancy Drinks
I'm told, if you care about martinis at all, there are three levers to watch for: spirit choice (gin will lean botanical; vodka hides botanicals and lets texture speak), vermouth ratio (more vermouth opens sweetness and body; less keeps the spirit assertive), and dilution/temperature (a properly stirred, properly chilled martini will read smoother).
Stay sharp, KC ☾
