Big thanks to Prime Social and Don Fulano for last Tuesday’s tequila celebrations. IYKYK. Three drinks, small plates, and new friends. FTMFW!
Also, congrats to Kansas City Restaurant Week; the organizers just handed reStart over $125,000. That's not a typo. Seventeen years of this city eating out for a good cause, and this year it turned into six figures for an organization that gets people off the street and into housing. I bring up a lot of frivolous things in this newsletter — cocktails, jazz sets, which bar has the best hidden door. Social services is another area where I put in work. KC eats well and takes care of its own at the same time; I’m here for it.
Big welcome to Young the Giant, rolling into Starlight Sunday with Cold War Kids and KennyHoopla in tow. The Victory Garden Tour closes out our weekend in style — outdoor amphitheater, a band that's been doing this since "My Type" was inescapable, and a Sunday night that DGAF about a Monday.

Last night of July. Artist booths, handmade goods, vintage racks, pay-what-you-can produce — all spread across the western side of the Rock Island Bridge. Free to walk through. Upstairs, a '60s–'70s rock tribute band closes it out at 8, and River House keeps the bar open all night if the market's not enough of a reason to stay.

Last Call
Three cocktails, three categories of Don Fulano, and one bar making it go.
Most tequila events pour one bottle six different ways and call it a tasting. Prime Social didn't. They built an experience where each cocktail, paired with a small plate and presentation...for those who were paying attention
Start with the Espresso Martini, made with Don Fulano Reposado. That's an unusual call — most bars reach for vodka here, or a blanco if they're feeling fancy. But reposado's barrel time gives it just enough vanilla and oak to stand up to espresso rather than disappear under it. It was a great way to kick this party off!
Then the Strawberry Fields Margarita, infused blanco all the way! Bright, citrus-forward, unaged spirit putting in work
The Jalisco Heat Old Fashioned closed the flight, and it's where Don Fulano Añejo finally got to be the whole point and my favorite. Spirit-forward, a little heat, built to be sipped slow — which is the entire argument for aged tequila in the first place. I’d run it back.
The small plates were doing quiet, necessary work all night — the kind of detail a lot of tequila events skip until people are three drinks in and regretting it.
What made the night, though, wasn't just the drinks. It was sitting at the bar long enough to end up in conversation with the staff and half the room around me — we covered best drinks, worst customers, tattoo stories, and smoked manhattans! Plus a bag of Don Fulano swag I didn't expect to care about but absolutely do.
That's the difference between a promotional event and an actual good time.
