Editor’s Note

March always feels like Kansas City loosening its coat-and-tie a bit. The sun pops up a bit sooner, the wind isn’t quite as sharp, and you start thinking about patios even if you’re still wearing a jacket. Winter hasn’t left, but it’s losing its grip.

The Ides of March get a bad reputation, but I’ve always liked this stretch of the calendar. It’s a pivot point. The college basketball buzz is building, touring acts are rolling back through town, and the rooms begin filling up again — not because it’s freezing outside, but because people actually want to be out. There’s a different energy at play.

This is the time of year to reestablish your spots. Revisit your favorite barstool. Try the new cocktail you almost ordered last time. Stay for the second set. March rewards a little decisiveness.

We’re about to close out the first quarter. Dress well, order something strong, and don’t call it an early night just yet.

I’ll see you at the bar.

Last Call

Laphroaig (Double)

Sometimes the night calls for simply — a double Scotch, Laphroaig —smoky, unapologetic, a little medicinal in the best way — the kind of Scotch that ain’t trying to please everyone. It shows up exactly as it is.

Pair that with a couple of dance partners and a song that runs longer than expected, and you’ve got what you came for. No spectacle. No performance. Just smoke in the glass and enough rhythm to keep you out past your original plan.

Just one more song, one more pour, and the quiet understanding that the best nights rarely end early.

Stay out a little longer.

Stay sharp, KC
