Dinner's done. The check's paid. Nobody's ready to go home. This is the part of the night Kansas City does better than people expect, and it runs later than most visitors realize. Here's where to go after 10, in the order the night usually unfolds.

10 PM: Keep It Moving
The Monarch Bar · Plaza. One of KC's sharpest cocktail rooms, and on weekend nights it slaps: live DJ, dressed-up crowd, ready to move. The clean handoff from dinner into the night — and it’s my favorite spot!
In The Lowest Ferns · Crossroads. A plant-filled cocktail room, soft and moody. It's the right second stop when you want the volume to maintain, not increase.
Brass Monkey · Crossroads. Unpretentious energy, just enough mischief. Book ahead on weekends. We learned that the hard way!
11 PM: Find the Music
Green Lady Lounge · Crossroads. No cover, no televisions, jazz seven nights a week, all local musicians. Red light, strong drinks, serious musicianship. The horns don't stop and the drinks have no brakes.
Nighthawk · Hotel Kansas City. The basement room under the old Kansas City Club, with a red-curtain stage for live music, DJs, burlesque, and drag. Walk in through the hotel and take the stairs down, you’re welcome.
XO HiFi. A high-fidelity listening room where the crowd goes quiet and the records do the talking. Friday's late set is the move. Arrive early, stay late.
The Ship · West Bottoms. Disco and boogie crates, salsa nights, and an OG Lounge that runs well past when you meant to leave. Check the calendar before you go, always something going on.
After 1:30 AM: The Real Thing
Mutual Musicians Foundation · 18th & Vine. Since 1930, musicians have gathered at 1823 Highland on Friday and Saturday nights after midnight to jam into the morning. It was the union hall for the Black musicians' Local 627, and it's now a National Historic Landmark. Players rotate on and off the stage, and whoever's in town drops in. No frills, and no other room in the country like it. If you only do one thing on this list, stay up for this.
The Soft Landing
Bar Stilwell · Loews Kansas City Hotel. Not everyone makes it to the Foundation. For a quieter finish, the Loews lobby bar is where the night ends well. One more drink, nobody asking why you're still out.
