Lobby bars are neutral ground. Nobody asks why you're there. Travelers drift in, locals post up, somebody's on a first date, somebody's closing a deal. You can have one drink or stay for three, and either way you're passing through something bigger than your own night.
The great ones hold history: The King Cole Bar at the St. Regis in New York, the Carousel Bar in New Orleans, the Polo Lounge in Beverly Hills, the Coq d'Or at The Drake in Chicago. Kansas City has its own entries in that tradition. These are the hotel bars SecretKC keeps going back to.

The lobby bar of KC. Custom cocktails, a room that moves with convention crowds and Kauffman Center theatergoers, and grown bar energy all the way through. It's the best place to begin a night downtown and, more often than not, the place to end one.

Zephyr Bourbon Bar · Marriott Kansas City Overland Park
More than 130 bourbons, whiskeys, and ryes, and staff who will build you a flight. I kept it simple here: cheesecake and a bourbon cocktail. Not overly sweet. A few slow bites, a sip, back and forth, watching the room move without having to move yourself. It's Johnson County's best argument for the lobby bar.

Chaz at the Raphael · Country Club Plaza
Live jazz, Plaza views, and the room KC adults bring someone they want to impress. Low light, good piano, and the Baby J Duo on Saturdays. It's the dressed-up end of the lobby bar spectrum, and it's earned the reputation.
P.S. Speakeasy · Hotel Phillips, Downtown
Not a lobby bar, strictly speaking. It's the hotel's old mail-sorting room in the basement, behind an unmarked door. But it runs on the same principle: you have to know where you're going. Doors at six. Reservations book a month out and cap at six people.

The Classic & Nighthawk · Hotel Kansas City, Downtown
Two rooms, one building: the old Kansas City Club, a 1920s landmark. Upstairs, The Classic is the lobby bar, with classic cocktails built on Kansas City spirits and a weekday happy hour. Downstairs, Nighthawk is the late move: a red-curtain stage, live music and DJs, and drag the first Wednesday of the month. Start at the top, finish in the basement.

How to Do a Lobby Bar
Arrive without a plan. Order one thing done well. Sit where you can see the door. Let the room do the rest. Sometimes the move is knowing where to be when you're not ready to go home yet.
