Kansas City's bars just found their favorite argument of the year: give us the extra two hours back!
During the World Cup, sixteen bars across the Plaza, Westport, downtown, River Market, and 18th & Vine got permission to stay open until 5 AM instead of the usual 3. The tournament's over now, hours reverted, and the owners who lived through it are not happy about going back. Steve Stegall at Blue Line Hockey Bar in River Market said foot traffic jumped 40% in just those two extra hours. Chuck Bardes up in the Northland credited his bar's spot near the airport and a cluster of hotels for pulling in late-arriving travelers who'd otherwise have nowhere to go. Now both of them, along with a handful of others, are talking to the city about making it permanent. Reminds me of the pandemic days and getting restaurant pick-ups of food and drinks! It turns out the demand was already there, just waiting on the clock to catch up.
Herbie Hancock plays the Kauffman Center Thursday — don't wait around to decide about it. Friday, the whole Crossroads turns into a gallery for First Fridays, Ne-Yo and Akon roll through Morton Amphitheater, and Café Corazón's teaching salsa before the crowds show up. Saturday, Logan Richardson brings a piece built around Charlie Parker to the Gem Theater, which is the kind of night that makes you understand why 18th & Vine wanted its 5 AM hours back too.
Whatever the city decides about the clock, don't wait on it. Go find your late night this week the old-fashioned way — on purpose.

The J Love Band @The 1909 Club
Most bands play at you. The good ones play with the room, and the great ones make you forget there's a stage at all. The J.Love Band falls into that last category. Jazz, blues, funk, soul, and stories. This is a band that's been doing this long enough to know a crowd doesn't want one flavor for ninety minutes straight. The 1909 Club is a great spot if you haven’t been. Low light, close quarters, no bad seats, great staff and cocktails — if you've been sleeping on it, that's on you.
I'd been trying to catch J.Love for a while. Finally, spontaneously this week, we wandered into Libations, and there she was — and she gave up her own spot so we’d have somewhere to sit. I'll remember that longer than any individual song, and there were plenty of nostalgia-fueled songs.
Some nights the drink is the story. This one was the room and the woman who made space for me in it.
